Mat Kerekes - Ruby

Oh man, where to begin with Ruby. I've read a ton of comparisons between this and Queen. I only hear it in the back up vocals. This feels so much more personal than anything mainstream music can give. It starts out with a little chord progression that makes you feel like you're on the couch with Kerekes, like he's just playing around on the guitar. "Noodling," as it were. Then the drums come in with a pop and they bring that funky little bass line in with them. The first time I heard it, I almost lost Kerekes' vocals, because every other aspect of the song is just as captivating as his voice. It is just a silky smooth intro. Puts you right in the groove. A quick build up into a refrain of the first verse. The drums come in a little heavier and you realizing you're listening to what is about to be one of your favorite songs of 2019. I'm writing this a little late, 2020; so I've put some time into the record. I guess my year ended up slipping away.....

Better Oblivion Community Center - Self Titled

Conor Oberst. Phoebe Bridgers. It's fitting that Oberst means Colonel in German, because Oberst is definitely a high ranking official in the Indie/Emo world. It's almost impossible not to mention Bright Eyes when you hear his involvement on a project. There are even a ton of Better Oblivion Community Center YouTube covers of Bright Eyes songs with Phoebe singing along with Mr. Oberst or sometimes alone. Her voice is something special and getting together with a veteran like Oberst has the potential for some serious Emo material. Better Oblivion Community Center is just that; Oberst and Bridgers coming together to give us all something we can get seriously mellow to. The first thing you notice after your first listen about this amalgam is that they sing together quite a bit, it's much less a duet and much more two lead singers. It has a trance-like effect. If you're listening for Obersts signature shaking, butterflies-in-your-stomach, voice, it's there; conversely...

Halsey - Manic

It would be far too easy to write off an artist like Halsey as just another mediocre voice with a good producer. A famous voice for no reason. But, I don't think that is how Halsey should be taken. I think she should be taken dead seriously, as seriously as she takes her lyrics and subtle vocal inflections through out her third full length album. The desperation in her voice is the desperation I assume most of her listeners have in their everyday lives. She is a far better writer than her basic song structures would suggest. And her voice is much more enveloping than her less than climactic discography would allow you to believe. She comes from the part of New Jersey that claims New York sports. Had she been born 50 miles south, I think she'd be an underground Emo sensation touring Philly clubs and signing to Run For Cover or Saddle Creek. As it stands, she was fortunate enough to go pop and be able to afford to pay her rent. Her voice seems to keep getting better with every...

Pinegrove - Marigold

Not since Hurricane by Something Corporate has a song hit me quite like No Drugs. The melody and the decrescendo of the acoustic guitar felt like the end of a movie that had the exact conclusion it needed to leave the audience feeling satisfied. I think anyone from America right now can empathize with what I suppose could be considered a chorus, "I want to feel good." The way his voice vibrates when Evan Stephens Hall holds the word good, it's impossible not to feel exactly what he's feeling. The album swells on with Moment; probably the best song the band has ever written. And I'm saying that knowing this band wrote; Aphasia. Cadmium, Recycling, Morningtime, The Metronome and Intrepid. I stand by my statement. Every aspect of that song is absolutely perfect. Hall's inflections, the entire band hammering together in that hesitated way but perfectly in sync. The bassline comes through holding the song together like a bridge, the cars driving ove...
